On Team Teabag user Reen wrote down some of his first impressions of the gOS Gadgets

  • the installation process is very easy
  • the default look-and-feel is not such a good story
  • “this is the first time I’ve used Google Gadgets and I have to say that I was impressed”
  • on the subject of performance, gOS is a very mixed bag
  • gOS isn’t a terrible operating system, but it’s not particularly great either

Solid state drives (SSD) are now faster than hard drives, and save battery life.

Intel is claiming 5 years of “useful life” for the X-18M on client PCs, based on writing approximately 100GB of data every day. If those claims are accurate, then SSD may have a chance of dislodging regular hard drives as the storage method of choice for desktops and notebooks, especially given the speed increases.

Compared with a 5400 rpm hard disk drive, Intel says its SSDs achieve 9 times the performance under the PCMark Vantage benchmark. Common tasks like scans using Windows Defender are 40% faster, or so the stats say.

Intel’s says that the new line of 80GB and 160GB flash drives provide massive performance boosts in transfer rates.

Intel claims the X18-M (1.8 inch) and X25-M (2.5 inch) drives have read speeds up to 250MB/s, write speeds to 70MB/s and a read latency of 85 microseconds

Intel® Mainstream Solid-State Drives are available in either 2.5″ (Intel® X25-M Mainstream SATA Solid-State Drive) or 1.8″ (Intel® X18-M Mainstream SATA Solid-State Drive) standard hard drive form factors. And all Intel Mainstream SSDs are tested and validated on the latest Intel-based mobile and desktop platforms for your peace of mind.

HDD (hard disk drives) reads and writes take about the same time as each other while PC SSDs (the SSDs - solid state drives - without write acceleration) take 100 times as long to write as to read.

Windows is based on 2 things that pose problems:
1.) It assumes reads and writes take the same amount of time.
2.) It uses 4KB (yes: K) pages in its virtual memory.

Methinks that the problem of optimizing Windows for an SSD would require a company-wide effort since there has been no single focus on this angle before, so the problem is scattered widely across all the code, shotgun-style.

The Eee PC 900A comes with a ordinary 4400mAh battery and uses a different connector than the battery of the Eee PC 900 or the Eee PC 701. That means you can’t just swap out a spare battery you already have lying around or pick up one of the hundreds of spare batteries you can find on eBay.

Far EasTone Telecommunications, one of the biggest mobile phone service providers in Taiwan, on Monday started offering a deal for an Eee PC usable on its 3G (third generation mobile telecommunications) network for just NT$900 (US$28.70) with a signed contract.
