LCD panel makers expect the 9-inch panel segment (panel used in the Eee PC 900) to be in tight supply in the 2nd half of 2008.
Currently, only Chunghwa Picture Tubes & AU Optronics have launched 9-inch panels for low-cost laptops. Samsung, Chi Mei Optoelectronics, HannStar Display & LG Display are also expected to roll out 9-inch models for low-cost laptops soon.
As for LCD panel makers' capacity for the segment, Chunghwa Picture Tubes will have a total of 1 million units this year, LG Display 2 million units, Chi Mei Optoelectronics 3-4 million units, Samsung 3.5 million units & AU Optronic 4 million units.
This means, panel supply for the 9-inch low-cost laptops will be tight, but whether it will be in short supply will depend on laptop vendors' actual shipments, the sources commented.
Asustek estimate shipments of their Eee PC 900 will reach 3 million units this year.
