ASUS is considering to install the Linux-based Google Android OS on future Eee PCs.
Google initially developed Android for cellphones (T-Mobile G1) but ASUS has allocated engineers to develop an Android-based Eee PC by as early as the year end, Samson Hu, head of the Taipei-based company’s Eee PC business, said in an interview with Bloomberg.com.
"With the strength of Google behind it, Android could really challenge Microsoft and steal some market share," said Calvin Huang, a computer-industry analyst at Daiwa Securities Group Inc. in Taipei, as quoted on Bloomberg.com.
It's quite easy to port Android to Netbooks like the Eee PC, as is shown a few weeks ago on an Eee PC 701.
